Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood is a European folk tale with several variants, collected by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. Although the ending is different, depending on the version, the common thread of the story follows the little girl’s journey through the forest, towards her grandmother’s house, and her encounter with a terrifying wolf.  Like all other stories, this one too begins with… once upon a time, there was a sweet little girl, whom everybody loved dearly. One day, her grandmother gave her a red hood, sewn especially for her. The girl was so happy and wore it so much, that everybody started calling her Little Red Riding Hood.

But one day, her grandmother got sick and, as her mother was too busy, she called the little girl and told her:

– My darling, take this basket to your poor old grandmother – the juice and the delicious pies will help her get her strength back. Hurry up and don’t wander about. I know you love running around in the woods, but make sure you don’t drop the basket and you don’t talk to strangers.

– Of course, Mummy, off I go!

As she was walking through the woods, to her grandmother’s hut, all of a sudden she saw a wolf. Little Red Riding Hood didn’t know how mischievous wolves can be, so she answered when he asked:

– Good day, Little Red Riding Hood! Where are you off to, in such a hurry?

– Good day, wolf. I’m going to see my grandmother – she is sick.

– And what do you have there?

– Some pies and some juice.

– Mmmmm, and where does your grandmother live?

– Here, in the woods, not too far from here. Her hut is behind three mighty oaks – you must know it, since you live here.

– Well, of course I do. Nice to see you – I wish I could talk more, but I must go now. Ah, look at those beautiful flowers. Don’t you think your grandmother would like it if you brought her some? said the wolf, thinking this would save him some time.

He was planning on snatching them both, so he ran to the hut behind the oaks.

– What a thoughtful wolf! Yes, that is a wonderful idea.

In the mean time, the wolf hurried and knocked on grandmother’s door.

– Who’s there?

– It’s me, Little Red Riding Hood, I’m here to bring you something good to eat. Open the door, granny!

– Come in, I can’t get out of bed.

The wolf opened the door, went in, rushed to the bed and, without saying a word, swallowed the woman up, put on her clothes, pulled the curtains and waited patiently in bed.
I wonder why the door is open. Granny, are you at home?

As no one answered, Little Red Riding Hood went to the bed and saw… her grandmother.

– Oh my, granny, why are your ears so big?

– So that I can hear you better.

– Oh my, granny, why are your eyes so big?

– So that I can see you better.

– But, granny, why are your hands so big?

– So that I can touch you better.

– And granny, why is your mouth so big?

– So that I can eat you better!! Ha haaaaa!

Hardly had the wolf said that, when he jumped out of the bed and swallowed poor Little Red Riding Hood. After such a feast, the wolf fell asleep and started snoring loudly. It just so happened that a hunter was passing by and, alarmed by the loud noises, said:

– The old woman is snoring so loudly! I wonder if she’s alright. I should check…
And in he went.

– Amazing! I never thought I would find you here, you rascal! I’ve been looking for you for ages.

The hunter was ready to shoot the wolf, but, suddenly, a thought crossed his mind:

– What if the wolf has eaten the old woman? Maybe I could save her.

So instead of shooting, he took out his scissors and started cutting the wolf’s belly and took out Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, both safe and sound.

– Wow, that was scary!

As she said this, the little girl grabbed some boulders from around the hut and they all filled the wolf’s belly. In vain did the rascal try to run, the boulders were so heavy, that he fell to the ground.

– From now on, I will listen to my mother! thought Little Red Riding Hood and hugged her grandmother tight!
