Jules Gabriel Verne was born in Nantes, one of the most important port cities in France. He was fascinated by travel, sea, ships since childhood and wished he could go around the world. He made his debut as a novelist in 1863 with the adventure writing Five Weeks in a Balloon, then continued with A Journey to the Center of the Earth. The travels during his life inspired him to write, in 1872, the text that you will discover below. It’s amazing that Jules Verne imagined things that didn’t exist in his time, but were realized decades after his death: the submarine, the helicopter, even space flight.
Phileas Fogg is an upstanding English gentleman with a strict routine every day: He has tea and toast and he leaves the house to join his friends at the Reform Club. Every clock he owns is synchronized down to the second. One morning while playing whist at the club, Fogg and his friends overhear news that a robber has stolen money from the Bank of England. One of the members, remarks that the robber is probably long gone, since the world is so large. But Fogg says that it is now possible to travel across the world in couple of days due to modern advances in transportation. Fogg makes a daring wager: he bets all the money that he can travel around the world in eighty days. The men accept and agree to find him at the Reform Club, in the same room, at the same time, eighty days later. Meanwhile, London police officer Detective Fix has a theory that Fogg is actually the thief. He follows Fogg on his travels, the first stop being at Suez, Egypt. Then, Fogg arrives in India, where he is forced to travel by elephant for part of the way. Fogg saves an English woman, Aouda, from being killed. Aouda joins Fogg and Passepartout, his vallet in their travels. The group continues toward Hong Kong by way of Singapore. The group continues on toward Japan, and then across the Pacific, landing in San Francisco. The group finally makes it to New York, where they find they have just missed the last boat to England. Fogg makes a deal with a Captain to get them to Bordeaux, France, but ends up taking control of Speedy’s ship to steer it toward Liverpool. Despite all his mad, Fogg feels crestfallen to find that he arrives in London too late. He’s lost the bet. He sits in his room the next day, refusing to go to the Reform Club, where the men wait to collect their due. Aouda, asks him if he’d like to make her his wife. He sends Passepartout to Reverend Wilson to make arrangements for their wedding. While speaking to Reverend Wilson, Passepartout learns that it is, in fact, a day earlier than he believed. Because Passepartout refused to set his watch to local time zones, he has led them to gain a day on their travel across the world. Fogg rushes to the club to inform his friends that he’s won.
