Hansel and Gretel is a German fairy tale, adapted and published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, known in literature as the Brothers Grimm, were born near Frankfurt, Germany to a family of nine children. They are the authors of numerous linguistic studies and stories loved by many generations of children such as Snow White, The Brave Tailor, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel. Many of the stories they wrote were adapted for cinema by creators such as Walt Disney. The brothers were inspired, including for Hansel and Gretel, by the stories that were circulating, by word of mouth, in the region where they lived.
Like all stories, this one begins with… once upon a time there was a little boy named Hansel. He lived in a small house at the edge of a forest with his father, stepmother and sister Gretel. They were very poor so one evening the two husbands consulted and because they had nothing left to feed their children, they decided to take them to the forest and leave them there. The two children heard the conversation and were scared, but the little boy collected the white pebbles in front of the house, and the next day, when they started for the forest, he took care to leave a pebble from place to place on the path to know the way back. When he ran out of pebbles, he left crumbs from the corner of bread he had in his pocket on the road, but the birds ate the bread after him and the children could not find their way back home.
The next morning they saw a house made of bread, with a roof made of cozinac and windows made of sugar. The two children began to eat from the house, until an old woman came out of it and invited them into the house and fed them to their fill, then put them to sleep in two beds with snow-white bedding. In fact, the old woman was an evil witch who lured children and when she caught them, she would not let them go. It is said that he made some people hate him and tell him stories, others he made them cook and some he even ate. She locked Hansel in a stable with iron bars, then made the little girl cook to fatten Hansel up before turning him into dinner. But Hansel knew what plans the witch had and always put a small bone through the bars. Upset that he was not gaining weight, the witch decided to eat Hansel and ordered Gretel to heat the oven. But Gretel had already made her plan. She pretended she didn't know how to light the oven and asked the witch to help her. Baba approached the furnace, then stuck his whole head into it to show the girl how the coals were heated and how the embers were stirred. It took so much for Gretel that in a second she pushed the grandmother into the hot oven and closed the door as best she could, then released Hansel. But what to see? The house was full of gold coins and jewels, so Hansel filled his pockets and Gretel the little apron and started home where they lived a good life until they were very old.
