Peter Pan is the fantasy character who takes the Darling family children on an adventure to Neverland, a magical place full of pirates and fairies. He was created by Scottish writer J. M. Barrie in the play Peter Pan or The Boy Who Refused to Grow Up (1904) and the novel Peter Pan and Wendy (1911). While Tinker Bell is Peter’s best friend, Captain Hook is his worst enemy. Peter Pan is probably one of the most beloved characters in children’s literature because it illustrates eternal childhood and the refusal to become an adult.

Like all other stories, this one too begins with… once upon a time, on a warm, quiet night, in London, two young brothers, Michael and John Darling, were playing a game: they were pretending to be Peter Pan and Captain Hook, the characters their sister would read to them about almost every night.
– That’s enough now, off to bed, said mr. Darling, turning off their lights.
Mr. Darling and his wife soon left for a party, so the three children were all alone.
All of a sudden, the window opened and a young boy snuck in. It was Peter Pan himself, the character from the story Wendy loved so much, followed by Tinkerbell, the fairy the size of a thumb.
– Look, Tinkerbell! It has hidden under the closet. I can see it!
No sooner had Peter said that last word, than he knocked over a chair, which fell to the ground with a loud thud.
– Hey, who are you? You’ve woken me up! said Wendy, surprised.
– What do you mean? I’m Peter Pan and I’ve lost my shadow in your room.
– We must stitch it back, said Wendy, jumping out of bed. I’ll bring a needle and sew it back on… But… I wonder… how did you get here?
– Easy, we flew! If you don’t believe me, come with me, I’ll take you to Neverland, where I live, and I can introduce you to all my friends.
– Yes, that sounds amazing! John, Michael, wake up! Peter Pan is here! And he wants to take us to Neverland!
– What?! mumbled John, still half asleep. How are we supposed to get there?
– We’ll fly. Look!
It only took Peter Pan a few minutes to teach the three siblings how to fly and, with some fairy dust from Tinkerbell’s dainty wings, they soared through the clouds.
– I can’t wait to fight real pirates, said Michael out loud.
– When we reach the second star, we’ll turn right and then straight on ahead.
Tinkerbell led the way and got to the Lost Boys of Neverland first. She was jealous of Wendy, as Peter paid more attention to her now, so she told the other boys that a dreadful bird was coming and that it had to be brought down. In the meantime, Peter Pan and the three siblings were getting closer to the place where the Lost Boys would sleep.
– Hey, hey, gather round! I’ve brought you a mother! Please treat her well and don’t scare her away.
– But Tinkerbell said she was a dreadful bird…
– What?! How could you, Tinkerbell?! You’re no longer welcome in Neverland!
The three siblings started exploring Neverland. Everything seemed perfect, until, one day, as it happens, when you least expect it, something terrible comes along: captain Hook and his pirates came and kidnapped Tiger Lily, the daughter of the great Indian chieftain.
– Throw her in the water, mister Smee, or take her to the Stone Skull. I won’t keep her hostage anymore; if she won’t tell me where Peter Pan is hiding, she’s of no use to me.
– That’s Captain Hook, Peter Pan explained to Wendy. See? He has a hook for a hand. A crocodile reaped his left arm and he has been hunting it ever since. We must save the girl, even if it means dueling for her.
– Captain Hook, release the girl at once!
Hook leapt, threatening Peter with his sword, but stumbled and fell in the water, straight into the crocodile’s jaws.
– Tick, tock, tick, tock! could be heard from the animal’s stomach, as it had once swallowed a clock.
– Hang on, captain, I shall rescue you! said Smee, helping him back on the ship.
The Chieftain was so happy when he saw his daughter, that he gave Peter a feather headdress and offered him the Indian honorary title: Flying Eagle.
– Wow, this day has really been something else, said Wendy. Let’s go home and rest, we’ve been through so much today!
– I don’t want to sleep, said Michael. But I do miss our home and… our Mother.
– What’s a Mother? asked one of the boys from Neverland.
– Mothers are the most wonderful and exquisite creatures on earth, Wendy tried explaining to her friends, but the more she spoke, the more she missed London and her parents.
– Peter, me and my brothers need to go back home.
– As you wish! But if you go back, you’ll grow up. Only those who live in Neverland get to be children forever.
But Wendy had already made up her mind – she wanted to go home, but she had no idea that captain Hook and his pirates were out to get them. They had tricked Tinkerbell into telling them where Peter was hiding. Hardly had the children bid their farewell, when they found themselves all tied up, and Tinkerbell was thrown in a lamp so small, that she could barely move her wings.
– Ha, ha, you either join me and my crew, or I shall feed you to the sharks! Don’t count on Peter Pan saving you again. He’s in for a treat. At 6 sharp, this box will explode and your hero will be lost for good.
When everything seemed hopeless, Tinkerbell managed to break free and to fly to Peter Pan.
– Hey, Tinkerbell! Stop! This is a gift, why are you taking it away?
Tinkerbell told Peter everything and they both flew to their friends’ rescue. After a long duel, Wendy and her brothers were set free.
– We woooooon!
– All aboard! Off to London we go! said Peter.
– Hooraaaay! shouted Michael and John.
At home, mister and misses Darling were just walking into their children’s room, to check up on them when lo and behold, they saw Wendy’s bed empty, but their little daughter sleeping against the windowsill.
– Mom! Dad! Peter Pan has just brought us back from Neverland!
– How odd, said their father, looking up on the sky, at a strange cloud, shaped like a boat. I have a feeling I saw this cloud before, a long time ago, when I was a young boy.
